We love our sweet things around the bee hive… chocolate, ice cream, cookies, … did I mention chocolate? So there’s really no way to completely avoid these, even when we “diet” a little. In no way do I want my kids to think we are dieting, anyway – even if we are. I want them to enjoy what they eat. That doesn’t mean we can’t hide a few healthy ingredients in a sneaky milk-shake… I’m not above a little trickery in the kitchen. Mama’s going to get them to eat their yogurt and take their Omega 3s, Iron, Zinc and Flavanols (antioxidants).
This is a shake I sometimes mix up for breakfast, or just because – as a snack or treat.
Linwoods sent me their “Ground Flaxseed, Cocoa, Strawberries & Blueberries” as a powder/grind that you can use as regular cocoa powder in many different things (shakes, muffins, oatmeal, granola, pancakes, waffles, cookies, yogurt, desserts). We like it best so far in these shakes. My husband was grinding up his own flax shakes for the longest time (until he got tired of them) and I couldn’t stand the way they tasted… but this product has totally changed my opinion (for the better) on flax shakes! Yay for Linwoods!
- 4 tblsp Linwoods Ground Flaxseed, Cocoa, Strawberries & Blueberries
- 1-2 bananas (frozen works great, too)
- 1-2 packages hot chocolate mix
- 1 cup organic plain greek yogurt
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 3-4 tblsp heavy cream
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (at least 60% dark)
- 1 tblsp organic cain sugar
- 3/4 cup ice cubes
- Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Drink while cold and frothy. Garnish with mint leaves (optional).
{ Who wouldn’t love to have a cup of this frozen love placed in their hands after their school assignment list is checked off? }
You can add a little cool-whip to it (Mmmm) or hazelnut syrup if you have it, if it isn’t sweet enough for you. I bet a little espresso would be divine in it, also. You can really just play around with the ingredients and tweak it however you like it best. The trick is to make sure and get enough good stuff in the shake, while still keeping it yummy enough that your kids call it “ice cream”.
{ You can thank me later – when your little homeschool punks ask their favorite Snack Queen Mommy to make them that yummy chocolate shake again! }
In Him,
Heather

Disclaimer: Linwoods gave me the flaxseed mix listed in the ingredients above as one of three or four items to try, but did not compensate me for my opinion. If we didn’t like it, we wouldn’t eat it – or share it with you!
