“I’ve started to look at life differently. When you’re thanking God for every little you – every meal, every time you wake up, every time you take a sip of water – you can’t help but be more thankful for life itself, for the unlikely and miraculous fact that you exist at all.” ― A.J. Jacobs
Today my daughter made this little piece of artwork, and my children helped me clean up the house as a gift for their father. We don’t do many gifts unless they are hand-made around here. Most holidays we focus on sharing the gift of togetherness – and good food. { By the looks of me right now, a little too heavy on the food part. }
This morning after breakfast, I caught my daughter with her paints and art supplies strewn across the kitchen table, working diligently and shooing me away so I wouldn’t see until she was finished. How could I be mad? And those Legos all over the floor? Yep – another hand-made gift from the three year old, who was making a “picture of me” in 3-D block form. He said I was his “duck”.
The chores didn’t get done on time today. Not much school did, either. We might have started off on the wrong foot, but with a little love and forgiveness, it all came out OK.
My kids are a lot like me – easy to please. My husband always said I was a cheap date and have remained a ‘low maintenance’ wife. I like to think of it as being CONTENT with what you have, THANKFUL for what you are given. I try hard to teach my kids that they will be much happier in life if they are thankful.
“Mamma says gratitude helps us to see what is there instead of what isn’t.” ― Annette Bridges
Expectations can be a real killjoy. That’s why a lot of people hate Valentines Day. They have an image – an expectation – of what it is, and most of the time, life doesn’t deliver what you expect. Most of the time you don’t get exactly what you want when you want it, either. People hurt the ones they love the most.
But life is good. God is good. Every day is a miracle… and somewhere in each day is a hidden blessing – just waiting for you to notice it.
Matthew 13:15-17 ~ ‘For the heart of this people has become dull, with their ears they scarcely hear, and they have closed their eyes, otherwise they would see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and understand with their heart and return, and I would heal them.’ 16″But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17″For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
The language of heaven is quiet and unimposing. It requires us to listen close and pay attention. Rarely will God SHOUT. He woos and waits. He whispers.
I pray you heard whispers of love for you today. I’m praying that you heard His still small voice… saw Him in someone’s smile, felt Him in the warm breeze that promised of spring around the corner… heard Him in the laughter of your children.
{ Happy Valentines Day! }
In Him,
Heather
